The study of a recent lesson brought to my thought two very convincing demonstrations in proof that there is no sensation in matter.

The one was several years ago when I first took up the study of Christian Science. I came home one afternoon and found my then small daughter crying with pain from a troublesome hangnail. It was something unusual for her to cry over a little thing, but in spite of my effort to quiet her, she still seemed to suffer from the condition. We soon sat down to supper, but the thumb pained her so she could not eat. I said, "Flanie, let us ask God to cure it," and to the best of my understanding I gave my first Christian Science treatment. I shall never forget the face that greeted me when I had finished. With the big tears still in her eyes and on her cheeks, and her face radiant with joy, she said, "Mamma, it does not hurt me at all, not even when I pinch it."

The other was a few months ago. My daughter and I were making cakes, when she took from the stove a long-handled pan of hot caramel and set it on the table. She sat down to stir it, but in some way hit the handle and tipped the contents of the pan into her lap, pouring it over one hand. She gave a wail of agony, and I declared audibly, "There is but one Mind." With the words came the realization, that nothing has power or intelligence unless God gives it, and His power governs all. For the moment there was no sense of a discordant condition in my home, or in the whole world. In less time than it takes to tell it, the pain was gone and her hand was not even red.
