The Mother Church Manual

THE influence of Christian Science on the world, and particularly on Christian Scientists, is in the highest sense educational. It induces them to think, act, and live according to higher moral standards. It guides them in the establishment and maintenance of simpler and better forms of ministry, of religious services and methods, and of individual and denominational progress and procedure.

Revealing, as it does, the science of spiritual law, it emphasizes the paramount need of obedience to that law and discloses the unfailing blessings which are the sequence and reward of such obedience. This miracle of obedience has always seemed hard of attainment by the people of God. Of old, the Children of Israel murmured constantly because of divinely imparted ordinances for their welfare, and were impatient with the prophets and messengers of God whose spiritual vision was in advance of their own. Christian Scientists who are learning that God's ways are higher than our ways, look forward with calm and assured expectancy to the appearing of every mandate, knowing that it means an advance on the broad scene of eternal prosperity.

We are a people who in time past were in allegiance to the unnumbered beliefs of men concerning religion, philosophy, and conflicting worldly wisdom. Coming together as we do, to range ourselves under the common denominator which designates us, it is perhaps little wonder that we need the salutary rules which define for us a safe course of action calculated to unify and glorify the present, and by sure means to safeguard the future.
