The doctrine of the future torment of the wicked in a lake of fire has been strenuously opposed by many. Whatever may be said about the future condition of the wicked, every intelligent observer must confess that their present condition of the torment. Whether there be a lake of fire in the other world into which the wicked are cast after death or not, there is certainly a lake of fire in this world the wicked are now writhing in indescribable torment.

Sin is a fire, a very hot fire. It often tortures the body. Sin torments the memory. It is a sad and bitter thing to remember past sins. It torments the conscience. A guilty conscience is an unquenchable fire. When the sinner lies down at night the smart is on his soul, and when he wakes in the morning it is still with him.

Sin is a consuming fire. Nothing is so destructive....
