I was awakened one night at twelve o'clock by the ringing...
I was awakened one night at twelve o'clock by the ringing of my door bell. On answering it I found a lady and gentleman who requested me to come with them at once to a lady who was suffering from appendicitis. The doctor said there was once chance for her life,—an operation which was to be performed in the morning. They told me of the patient's suffering and the fear of the knife, and so they had persuaded the family, even though at the twelfth hour, to try Christian Science. I told them there were circumstances which prevented my going with them, but I would treat the patient and come early in the morning. I told them to have no fear but trust in God. I then went to my room, took my Bible and Science and Health, and read until it became clear to my own consciousness that the whole thing was mortal illusion, the patient, the disease, the doctor, the operation were but the dream of life in matter from which the patient must be awakened. I knew that man was God's way of expressing Himself in the world, therefore the idea of God could express or reflect only life and harmony, and from the sense of peace that came to me I knew the woman was healed. I arose and went to my bed. The next morning the doctors were to be there at nine o'clock, so I went at half past seven. I was shown into the patient's room. The first thing she said to me was, "I am perfectly well." I told her to arise and dress and take breakfast with her family, which she did. When the doctors came they were amazed. They found no fever, no swelling, no pains. They insisted on another examination, but could find nothing to remove. They acknowledged they could not understand it, as it had been one of the most pronounced and dangerous cases of appendicitis. This healing power is of God. No man may glory, but all may rejoice and give thanks.
