Concerning Testimonies

PERHAPS it would be well for some of us to consider our testimonies to Christian Science healing, given in our meetings and elsewhere, and to be sure that they are always modest as all would wish them to be.

It is a well-known fact that Christian Science has saved people from death and from the most distressing forms of suffering; nevertheless, the so-called "smaller" cases are quite as apt to satisfy the craving heart, if they express the truth; and we should remember this, and not try to make them appear "big" by using such words as "severe" and "violent," or by going into the details of error.

Sometimes there are cases given where the listener would have good cause to think the patient got well in spite of the treatment; and again there are those given of blind faith, purporting to be the work of Christian Science. And are we not too negligent of the oft-repeated counsel: not to employ terms unfamiliar to the outsider?

If Love prompts us to give a testimony, it will always be true; it will not be a rehearsal of error, or speak of work that is other than genuine Christian Science. Love will use us to convey its message to every hungering heart and will bring with it the assurance that God's Word does heal and bless all mankind. If Love prompts the testimony it will not be flippant or irreverent, and the words that breathe the spirit of divine Love will surely be the cup of cold water in Christ's name.
