A Distinction with a Difference
Philadelphia Bulletin
I HAVE read with considerable interest your story of Joanna Southcott. I have no occasion to question anything that is said in regard to the history of this woman, but inasmuch as the story is related in connection with the Leader of the Christian Science movement, I am led to believe that the attention of The Bulletin's readers should be called to the fact that Mrs. Eddy's career consists in introducing and establishing a scientific, demonstrable religion, which converts by its good work, and not by any faith imposed in mysterious conjurings or pretended sooth sayings. Christian Science has an advantage over that which is presented as a mere ism or theory. It is demonstrable and is followed every day by satisfactory results. Whatever of confidence the Christian Scientists may have imposed in their Leader is not due to any fetishism on their part as is said of that once placed in Joanna Southcott, but to her actual merit.
Mrs. Eddy has acquired a large measure of the wisdom, goodness, and love which the faithful application of Christian Science promises to all its adherents, so that whatever gratitude may be bestowed upon her by Christian Scientists is as natural and well placed as that which is bestowed upon Washington as the Father of his country, or upon Lincoln and other public benefactors.
Christian Science does not depend upon a mere theory. It is a scientific method of producing results, and it certainly will hold its place against material methods unless, perchance, its adherents fail so to live its teachings as to be worthy of what it promises and gives. That Christian Science appeals to thinking people, to the educated and experienced, is due to its scientific and demonstrable features.
