I was first told of Christian Science in 1897
I was first told of Christian Science in 1897. I was taking a vacation in a little country town not far from Rochester, N. Y. I had gone there with a lot of medicine furnished me by one of the best allopathic doctors in Buffalo. I had been under his treatment five months, without the least benefit, and for thirteen months previous to his taking my case I had been under homœopathic treatment, also without being helped. The doctors called my disease chronic nervous dyspepsia, and besides that, I had been afflicted for years with inflammatory rheumatism and bronchitis.
Two days after reaching the little country town, a lady arrived with her husband, and becoming acquainted with them, they soon heard of my affliction, and the lady told me about Christian Science and how it had cured her of Bright's disease, saved her when her physicians had given her up and she was entirely hopeless. She told me of the healing Truth in Christian Science, and lent me her Science and Health, the reading of which was a revelation to me. A few days after she told me about it, I went to Rochester, received treatment, and was helped at once. I was not perfectly healed in one treatment, but I received great benefit spiritually, and I knew from that time that I had found the pearl of great price, the Truth which maketh free. What impressed me more than anything else was that while I sought the physical healing, I was healed morally. From having been a great smoker of tobacco for thirty-five years, I soon lost all desire for it; and it was the same with the use of liquor and profane language. The Scriptures truly say, "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." That is what happened to me. I have become a new man; from being a hollow-eyed, thin, sickly-looking man, I am to-day the picture of health, having gained about twenty-five pounds in weight. I have not only gained in flesh, but also in spirit. I have had class instruction, and have been not only able to help myself, but also able to help others. For this understanding of Truth we are indebted to our dear Leader in Israel.
