"I Came to Fulfil"
We are all familiar with the statement that sickness and death come to us as discipline from God. If this be true. why did Jesus heal the sick and raise the dead and command all his followers to do likewise? Was not discipline needed as much then as now? and if it were the will of God that men should achieve a holier and more spiritual life through suffering, why should Jesus subvert this law of the Father? He says, "I am not come destroy, but to fulfil," and it is impossible to believe that Jesus could do aught not in perfect accord with God's law.
Jesus never told any man that it was God's will that he should suffer, so why should we say what is totally at variance with his teachings and practice? There is one place, it is true, where we are told that the mighty works were not done, but what is the reason? not because of any unreadiness on his part, not because it was the Father's will to perfect His children through suffering,—no, we are told that it was because of their unbelief. With His help we can as readily keep the command to heal the sick as to preach the gospel; in fact one includes the other. May we not assume that when we fail to receive physical as well as spiritual blessings from God, it is not because He withholds them, but because of our own unbelief?"
