Some years ago, when I first knew of Christian Science, my little daughter, then about four years of age, after having been put to bed in the evening would say her prayers and I would sit down beside the bed and listen, then turn down the light and leave the room. One evening (we were then visiting at her grandmother's), just as she was about to say her prayer, she looked up at me, her little face full of fear and trouble and her voice tremulous with emotion, and said, "Papa, will I have to die when I get to be an old lady?" This came so suddenly upon me, for there had been no intimation of any mental disturbance till that moment, that I hardly knew what to say, so to gain time to think up an explanation that would quiet her fears, I said no, and then I said, "I will say your prayer for you to-night," so I repeated the little prayer:—
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I know that God His child will keep,
I know that He my Life is nigh,
I live in Him, I cannot die.
