The Safety of Christian Science Treatment
Successful treatment for the cure of the sick has been earnestly sought through many centuries. The increase of diseases and the intense desire of mortals to escape from pain, have produced many differing schools of medicine which have pushed their investigations along every avenus which has held a glimmer of hope. The results have not been encouraging, for the secret of restoring health and soundness has not been discovered along any line of material research. It has not apparently occurred to these physicists that the secret of disease causation may not be in matter after all, but in the human mind; and that the restorative and curative power is to be found on the higher plane of spiritual being. In view of their long and fruitless quest they could well afford to be liberal in conceding this possibility, even if they have not yet reached that divine dissatisfaction with matter which would welcome its probability.
Christian Science has taken issue with all material theories as to the cause and cure of disease, and has presented to the world a purely Christian and spiritual system of treatment, based on the operation and availability of divine law as illustrated in the healing work of Jesus.
Among those unfamiliar with the results of this treatment the impression largely prevails that it is not a safe or proper method for healing the sick. There are many who, by reason of past thought and training, look upon any radical departure from visible agencies in the treatment of the sick as a hazardous neglect of the patient, since they cannot understand how any real help can be given which is intangible to material sense. This attitude is commonly due to a misapprehension of the nature of the so-called miraculous healing recorded in Scripture. A liberal investigation of the power of Christian faith over disease would remove this misapprehension. The assumption that Christian Science treatment is dangerous because no material means are employed is not sustained by fact, since its success in healing disease that have baffled medical skill is widely admitted even by its opponents. The increasing growth of Christian Science is the assured evidence of its success.
