On the morning of the 4th of July, 1903, I left my home for the office feeling in perfect health. I had proceeded but a short distance when I was suddenly attacked by very acute pains running through the lungs, and these were so violent as to impede respiration. The teaching of Christian Science came at once to my thought with distinctness, that "This is Life eternal," and whatever mortal thought may present to the contrary, is false; for man exists as God's idea, and to be always conscious of this, is life and harmony. Having made a study of Christian Science I was enabled to realize, to a certain extent, that matter was not sentient nor intelligent, and therefore could not talk to me, that all real existence was harmonious.
I had not walked two blocks before all the darting pains ceased, but this was superseded by a sense of congestion where the pains had been, and unless I held my shoulders back, there was a sense of pain as though the swollen parts pressed together. This feeling, however, began to abate at once, and by noon of the next day all manifestation had disappeared.
I have no idea what this attack would have been called; this, however, I do know, that Christian Science destroyed all fear at the moment of attack, the pain ceased very quickly, the congestion subsided in a short time, and I also know that without Christian Science to sustain me I would have been very fearful of results. I feel sure that my readers will agree with me that if in this instance Christian Science only served to destroy fear, it was a great blessing.
