A Noble Letter

The following letter was written by a former Jewess to a Rabbi friend of much prominence. It may not have convinced him of the truth of Christian Science, but the fault was certainly not with the letter.—Eds.

My Dear Doctor:—I trust you will pardon the liberty I have taken in addressing you by letter, but I desire to answer more fully some of the statements you made to me upon our recent causal meeting.

You admit that Christian Science has a modicum of truth in it, and if this "modicum" has succeeded in redeeming the sinner, though but one; if it has brought hope and courage to the sorrowful, despairing heart; if it has enabled my brother to realize, nay, merely to believe that his physical sufferings have been lifted, and thereby permitted him to go about his business with a sense of freedom from the chains that bound him; if it has taught me charity and love for my neighbor and made it possible for me, in turn, to reach out a helping hand to him; if it has given me a nobler, more helpful understanding of God; if it has done all this—and it has—then this wee "modicum of Truth" has accomplished something worth while, surely, and I for one thank God for the privilege of seeing, believing, accepting, and demonstrating this "modicum of truth," even though you feel authorized to question my sanity because I, forsooth, am endeavoring to practise what you preach, and because I that to God all things are possible.
