The Senate Committee on the Philippines admits that the silver standard for the Islands is a mistake. Governor General Taft urges the adoption of a gold standard. The contest in the Senate will be between the adoption of the double standard and the straight gold standard.

The attempt to have the differences between the miners and operators adjusted outside of the Commission through a subcommittee having proved futile, the Coal Strike Commission, after an adjournment of ten days, again resumed its sittings last week.

The United States Senate has confirmed the appointment of Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes of Massachusetts to be associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He expects to take his place on the bench this week.
