It may interest the readers of the Sentinel to read of the penetration of Christian Science into this "up country" village of Umtali, in Rhodesia, South Africa. I seemed to be the one chosen by God to be the mouthpiece for His message, and it is with feelings of the deepest humility and gratitude that I recognize the divine guidance.
I had scarcely begun the study of Christian Science when I came to this little town, just a year ago. What little I did understand was learned through the kind and loving help of a lady in London. I was not led to Christian Science by any physical healing, but because when I first heard it mentioned, and even though it was in tones of derision, I exclaimed to myself, "That rings true, and I believe it is what I have been waiting for." As the teachings of the Church of England brought me no satisfaction, I went to the lady above mentioned and drank in all she had to say on the subject, and then I bought Mrs. Eddy's book, Science and Health, and after reading a few chapters I threw it away, saying it was nonsense. My teacher smiled and said quietly that they had all been through that, and that if I read on it would come to me. And now I want to give my experience, hoping that it will encourage many a student despairing of ever understanding this wonderful book.
No one could have been more hopeless than I was. I thought I should never understand it, and for months I read and argued and questioned (all the time longing to be able to understand it). I was fighting Truth though I did not recognize that fact. Suddenly one day the thought came to me, "This has all been pointed out and proved for you, you have not to find it out, you have only to learn it." Then I gave up fighting and questioning and became in mind "as a little child," and from that moment the light gradually came. What I could not grasp I quietly passed over and saw light where I was allowed to see it, with the result that after ten or twelve months I not only can help myself in the matter of healing, but have been enabled to help others, two cases that I have been successful in, being serious internal troubles.
