A Progressive Pulpit

That pulpit is incredibly weak which still thunders with anathemas against Christians who do not pronounce its shibboleths. Who cares how men formulated their creeds from the New Testament a thousand years ago? We have access to the same Bible. We may formulate our own symbols and preach the Gospel from the same old Book from which they drew their inspiration. I do not decry the stream of the creed-makers; but I do rejoice that instead of being compelled to dip from those streams we can go to the fountain-head and get our message from the old Book, whose truths we may interpret as well as those who have gone before. The pulpit that now preaches creed instead of Christ; which exalts a method above a fact, and cares more for disputation about non-essentials than for impassioned appeals to men to lay hold of the essentials, is weak. There is too much defence of the truth in many pulpits and too little preaching of it. The truth needs preaching, not defending
