Growth

I would not have you think from what I have said or may say, or from what you may have observed in my daily life or in the lives of others, that the Scientist believes himself individually better in any way than those who have not yet attained to an understanding of Christian Science. Neither would I have you feel that I hold any belittling thoughts of materia medica or theology. Indeed, the true Christian Scientist realizes his debt of gratitude to those who now hold, and who in the past, to the best of their knowledge, have held the truth as high as they could. While I may feel that my orthodox and medical friends have not yet caught the true spirit of progress which rests upon the hour, I realize and appreciate the value and strength of the work these good people have done and are still doing. Those who cannot or will not accept this new-old light which is flashing across the world, need materia medica and theology until such time as they find the better way.

We all feel an attachment for the homestead from which years ago we went forth untried and inexperienced. We like to return, and with eyes stronger grown look again into the old well from which the "moss covered bucket" drew the water years agone, but we do not feel inclined to substitute that well, with all its sweet memories, for the conveniences we now enjoy by virtue of improved water supply.

We appreciate a visit occasionally to farming districts, in which the same old sickles are used that were in use long ago in harvesting, but we do not care to substitute the reap hook and the scythe for the improved harvesting machinery of to-day. These old ways and methods have served humanity well, and for that reason they lend a charm to the past, but the doors of progress have swung open and thinkers have pressed on to the consideration and acceptance of better ways and means.
