The Lectures

Hon. William G. Ewing addressed a large audience at First Church of Christ, Scientist, last night [October 10]. He was introduced by Mr. Holmes Hoge of this city, who said:—

Ladies and Gentlemen:—It is again my privilege to stand upon this platform and in behalf of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Evanston, to extend a cordial welcome to all present who have come to listen to the speaker of the evening. The subject is one that is engrossing the thoughtful attention of millions of the human race, many of whom have been raised from sick and dying conditions, and are now rejoicing in health and strength and in a fuller and more satisfying knowledge of God, whom to know aright is life eternal. There is nothing new in Christian Science, but it is the discovery of the great truths as taught by our Master in all their simplicity and strength that enabled him to overcome sin, sickness, and even death, and demonstrate over all material law. We endeavor to follow Jesus' example by preaching the gospel and healing the sick and sinful. This branch church, like all other Christian Science churches, has been planted here as the result of deep-seated conviction, and from this platform are promulgated truths that have for their foundation the words of Holy Writ, as found in the Bible and made plain to Christian Scientists by and through the spiritual interpretation as given in our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy. We have not accepted these teachings blindly, but have proved them true by actual demonstration; thus the knowledge of the truth of Christian Science is as firm in our minds as the fact that two times two are four and not five. Love is the impelling motive power of Christian Science. We seek not to proselyte, but simply in our Master's name to offer the cup of cold water to the dissatisfied, broken-hearted, weary, and heavy laden.

To-night we have with us a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, who will tell you some of the truths as taught in our text-book, and in the spirit of the love of Jesus Christ endeavor to make plain things that seem to some hard to be understood. Judge Ewing needs no formal presentation to an Evanston audience, but let me bespeak for him the earnest and sincere attention of those present.
