Unselfish Love is Holy Work
Some time ago, I heard these remarks from a lady interested in Christian Science. She said, "We had painters in our store within the last week, and they showed that they were much impressed with the kindness and love shown them by a Christian Scientist for whom they had worked. They said, "If all Scientists are as loving and considerate as this lady, then all ought to learn of Christian Science, and the working-men would have more respect shown them, and it would enable them to do their work more cheerfully." It seems that whenever she passed them she had a word of cheer for them. The janitor of a neighboring building where this Christian Scientist had a patient, had a similar experience and expressed gratitude for her kindness. While I was listening to these words a host of thoughts seemed to flow into my consciousness. They aroused within me a desire to express goodness in every act, word, and thought, and were a rebuke to idleness and self. It has long been lingering in my thought that unselfish love reflects the divine and manifests Life eternal.
This little incident has been a great help to me, for it has taught me that our enemy is only a lazy self, because our opportunities to express God, Good, are always at hand.
We learn in Christian Science that "God is Love," and that "God is All in all;" then it is unprofitable and useless to try to reflect anything but Love. The appreciation expressed by these men proved how beautiful and profitable is the reflection of Love in the small things of life. It healed them of prejudice and bitterness because of class distinction.
