A Japanese Student's Testimony

Truly the ninth of September was one of the memorable days of my life. That afternoon I was suddenly attacked with both stomach trouble and fever; and gradually my condition became so serious that I was compelled to retire to my private room. I passed the whole night struggling with my enemy, and was scarcely able to read the words to which I turned, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble," and "It is absurd to suppose that Spirit will produce disease and leave the remedy to matter" (Science and Health, p. 104).

I was tempted in my suffering to adopt a material method of relief, happily I was not overcome by the temptation, but determined that I would faithfully put my trust in the mercy of Providence.

With the above determination, the light of hope began to dawn in my heart despite my great agony. At this time I was visited by a kind friend, a Christian Scientist, who seeing my apparent suffering offered to give me a treatment. After about ten minutes of prayer for me, he left me with the following words of cheer: "Never mind, you will soon be all right." After his going I closed my eyes and prayed myself, and from that moment gradually a peace came upom me. I slept soundly until that evening, when, to my great wonder, I found that all the burden of agony had been taken away and I ate my supper with my usual appetite.
