A Kindly Protest

Portland (Ore.) Journal

Occasionally there appear in some papers uncharitable reflections upon the church or organization popularly known as the Christian Science Church, its teachings, leaders, and followers. Not infrequently the comments are based on a failure to heal some incurable disease, and statements which have no foundation are spread broadcast as facts, and on this flimsy base a superstructure of defamation, misrepresentation, and abuse is too often reared.

More often than not, the writer is quite ignorant of the subject-matter and makes up in sneers what he lacks in knowledge. There is unquestionably much in its teachings which the ordinary mind rejects. At the same time, we doubt if the average medical practitioner would enjoy having only his failures to cure made a subject of remark.

While not professing to know much of the creed, canons, or workings of this church, if its members are to be judged by their works, then there must be good in its teachings. If acts, not words, are to count, then their sincerity is beyond question.
