"One on God's side"

Those men and women who today are asking, "How can one individual effectively help in banishing from the earth the evils of want, war, sin, disease, and death?" will find an answer to their query in the truth indicated by Wendell Phillips, who said, "One on God's side is a majority." There is no peace for the unstable thought, for him who, believing in two powers, good and evil, endeavors to serve two masters. But there are quietness, assurance, and ultimate triumph for those who align themselves with Christian Science, holding steadfastly to the fact that, because God, good, is omnipotent and omnipresent, there can in reality be no place for, and no truth in, that which opposes good.

Though mankind desires peace, the world is at war. Mary Baker Eddy helps us in an analysis of this contradictory situation when she writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 96): "This material world is even now becoming the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will be discord and dismay; on the other side there will be Science and peace. The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error, when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth."

More effective than the armament of navies is the power of Truth, which is destroying the belief in the reality and power of evil; and Christian Scientists have enlisted in the great army of those who are equipped to fight on God's side, to prove the allness of Truth and the unreality of error. Truly, today as yesterday, "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds." We should ask ourselves, "Are we truly arming ourselves with the spiritual understanding which Christian Science gives; and are we going forward to prove increasing each day the supremacy of Spirit and the immortality of the real man, God's reflection?" We are fighting on God's side only as we are loyal to the consciousness of the all-power of divine Love and hourly demonstrate this fact. In this way the peace of the world and the healing of the nations will come.

More unflinchingly than all other men, Christ Jesus, our Exemplar, took his stand for Truth and triumphed gloriously through his understanding of God as infinite Love. The Christ-element in Jesus, the quality of absolute faith in God, the conviction of His allness and of the real man's indissoluble oneness with eternal Life, gave him the victory over death, and brought healing to those who felt the power of the Word. Jesus proved that they who are on God's side, who are endowed with unselfed love and endued with a clear sense of the infinitude of divine Mind, can heal the sick in any age, and such influence is felt throughout the world.

Mrs. Eddy clearly illustrated the fact that an individual who is inspired by God and actively working on the side of Science and peace blesses all mankind. In her discovery of the spiritual sense of the Scriptures, she presented in Christian Science the truth that the real man is wholly spiritual, and thus she bestowed an inestimable blessing upon humanity. Our Leader was always on God's side; and her life, as well as the Science she discovered, proclaims the fact that all the so-called forces of destruction are impotent before God's spiritual reflection, the real man. Each individual Christian Scientist who is today standing firmly for this truth, in accordance with our Leader's example, is siding with God. By holding to the spiritual facts of being he is helping humanity to cast off consuming fears, terminate factional and fratricidal disputes, and settle every question on the basis of one God, one lawmaker, one Mind.

The Scriptural record of the life of Joseph illustrates the fact that an individual who possesses an understanding of God, becomes a benefactor to his fellow man. Joseph did not indulge in thoughts of retaliation for injuries done him. Neither did he take the side of discord and dismay by repining over the losses he had incurred. Instead, he busied himself daily in glorifying God through his reflection of divine wisdom and Love. Thus he found himself wholly on God's side; he became an advocate of universal Love, and through God-given foresight was the means of saving multitudes from famine.

Do not the lives of prophets, apostles, and all truly great men and women indicate that the benefits fits of being allied to the divine power are expressed in spiritual gain and in great blessings to the human race? Then are we prepared to sacrifice our materiality in order to gain the bliss of spirituality? Are we ready to consecrate our lives to God, to enthrone perfect Love in the practice of Christian Science? Do we gladly abandon don fear and all the ignoble traits of the human mind, that we may possess the loveliness of Love, the true animus of divine Life, the trustworthiness of Truth, the sinlessness of Soul? These are the signs which point unerringly to the fact that we are standing with God. They clearly indicate that we have found in Christian Science our true selfhood as the constant reflection of perfect Mind.

One who sides with God in Christian Science relinquishes faith in material remedies as a means of healing disease, in human will as a settler of disputes, and in aggressive warfare as a way out of trouble. He has confidence that the correct view of man, together with self-abnegation, justice wisdom, brotherly love, is alone adequate to effect the emancipation of humanity from belief in the reality of evil. Any preachment or plan which has in it no universal blessing, has no echo in the heart of him whose Redeemer is Love. As the individual looks upon the problem of a weary world, he knows that its only solution is in Christian Science, in knowing and adoring one infinite God, who is all-embracing in His love, perfect in His handiwork, life-giving in His ministrations, all-sufficing in His goodness. Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 492), "Discussing his campaign, General Grant said: 'I propose to fight it out on this line, if it takes all summer.' Science says: All is Mind and Mind's idea. You must fight it out on this line. Matter can afford you no aid."

In view of the fact that God and His infinite manifestation are All-in-all, there can be no opposite side to this sublime truth. Accepting this basic reality, we must be prepared to say to every report of material mentality, "You claim to terrorize a world; to cause consternation, distress, dismay; to dominate or control; but in the words of Nehemiah, 'there are no such things done as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own heart.'"

We learn in Christian Science that the material sense of man is a myth, because man is spiritual. We are on God's side only as we realize this truth and prove the eternal fact that "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth." We have seen the great spiritual blessings which have been bestowed upon mankind through a demonstrable understanding of divine Life, Truth, Love, through praying and working on the side of Science and peace. In the words of a hymn (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 296), "O side with God, and win!"
