Spiritual Enlightenment
Enlightenment as to the true nature of God, man, and the universe remains the great need of the day. Already many have been so enlightened through their study of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and have experienced the resultant blessings. To them the outlook has become new, in a measure at least. Many questions have been answered, and many physical and other healings have taken place. But although such enlightenment has already been realized among those who have sought the truth in Christian Science, much remains to be done. Indeed, when one considers the present situation in the world, one realizes how much needs to be done!
In the material world many steps have been taken in the march of progress from ignorance to knowledge. In the Christian Science textbook Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 95), "We welcome the increase of knowledge and the end of error, because even human invention must have its day, and we want that day to be succeeded by Christian Science, by divine reality." One definition of the word "enlighten" is "to shed the light of truth and knowledge upon; to furnish with increase of knowledge; to instruct; also, to supply with spiritual light; to give insight to."
The Psalmist, praising God for many blessings, sang, "For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness." In the teaching of Christian Science it is possible to gain true enlightenment about God and man. It reveals the fact that God is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, infinite, omnipresent, omnipotent, and omniscient, All-in-all; that man is His spiritual idea, the perfect image and likeness of God, incorporeal and complete; that the real universe is entirely spiritual, good, and immortal; that matter is unreal; that God governs and controls all that He creates. It shows us how to overcome evil with good, to heal the sick, to pray aright, and to prove in innumerable ways the facts of being. In truth it may be said that there is no subject which the teachings of Christian Science cannot clarify satisfactorily, thus delivering men from ignorance, superstition, and false beliefs of every sort.
