"She selected a Sentinel from several in my hand and was most appreciative."

Deuteronomy in Hawaii

This verse from Deuteronomy was quoted in a recent article: "The beloved of the Lord shall dwell in safety by him; and the Lord shall cover him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders" (33:12).

This passage reminds me that the figurative meaning of lei in Hawaiian is beloved. In their Hawaiian Dictionary Elbert and Pukui explain that "a beloved child was carried on the shoulders, with its legs draped down on both sides of the bearer like a lei."
