You have a friend

Friends and relatives can't be with us all the time. But God, Love, is with us wherever we go.

A Little girl, separated from her mother in a crowded store, began to be very frightened.

Feeling quite alone, she reasoned that she would not be so afraid if only she had a good friend with her. Then, remembering that she had been taught at home and in the Christian Science Sunday School to think of God as her best friend, she realized she did have a friend with her! Greatly comforted, she quickly became calm and was soon reunited with her mother.

This simple incident demonstrates an important spiritual fact —that childlike acceptance of God as a loving friend who comforts and guides us, releases us from fear and brings direction into our lives. The first step to gaining this understanding is so simple a child can do it. It is to want to know God and to trust that our longing will be satisfied. In a chapter called "Prayer" in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy shares some of her insights on this subject. She explains, "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." Science and Health, p. 1.
