I grew up on a farm

I grew up on a farm. We all pitched in, but the brunt of the work was done by my parents, with my mother shouldering a large share. At one point my mother began to suffer with back pains. She was also unhappy much of the time and tired from the countless chores she had to perform daily. She yearned for release, yet there seemed no way out.

Our groceries were wrapped in a newspaper published in a little city fifty miles away. One day as my mother unfolded the paper, she read a small subheading on the first page. It said: "Girl falls from swing. Healed by Christian Science." The newspaper stated that the healing of the girl's severely injured arm had come quickly, after a visit to a Christian Science practitioner in the little city.

This event really impressed my mother. She thought, "This is what I need—healing!" She wrote to the editor of the paper for assistance in investigating the healing. The editor was helpful; he sent her the name and address of the practitioner. Mother got in touch with the practitioner and began the study of Christian Science. She found great support in Paul's statement "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (II Corinthians). Soon the heaviness my mother had been feeling began to lighten, and in its place came joy. She gained weight, and her pain disappeared. She smiled and laughed again. All four of her sisters, one of her brothers, and two of her children became active Christian Scientists.
