The descent of the Holy Ghost
Can the Holy Ghost that the Bible speaks of be experienced today?
In the Bible, Isaiah spoke of the "spirit of knowledge." Second Timothy refers to the "spirit of fear." And in common language today, a quality or condition of thought is often referred to as the "spirit" of something.
When Christ Jesus promised the coming of the Comforter, however, which would abide with us forever, he used this same phrase in a divine sense. He called the Comforter "the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not." See John 14:16, 17.
Whether twenty centuries ago or today, when the world looks to matter for the Comforter, it cannot be seen, because, now as then, the Comforter is spiritually discerned. The activity of the Comforter is to lead us to truth—to the understanding and demonstration of spiritual perfection. The healing power so present in Christ Jesus' ministry was not an interruption of the natural order of things but was evidence of how things actually are spiritually. The Comforter shows how this spiritual reality of God's kingdom can be understood and lived now.
