When I was about six or seven I became ill
When I was about six or seven I became ill. My father, who at that time was not a Christian Scientist, asked that a doctor be called. He diagnosed bronchial pneumonia and left some medicine. My mother asked me whether I wanted the medicine or Christian Science treatment. I had always gone to a Christian Science Sunday School, and I chose Christian Science. My father agreed to this decision. Mother and I talked about my true nature as God's spiritual idea and we sang "'Feed My Sheep,'" a hymn with words by Mrs. Eddy. Mother also called a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me.
By the third day I was well. I was sitting up making valentines when the doctor came to check on me. At first he accused Mother of showing him the wrong child! But she assured him I was the same one. He said I could go back to school the next day.
One morning, when getting up to go to work, I slumped to the floor from weakness. I started praying, knowing man's true status as God's image and likeness is spiritual, perfect, whole. I was able to get up, and then I called a practitioner for help. I also called my brother, who said that on the way home from work he would take me to his home.
