Many years ago I had several nervous breakdowns that were devastating at the time. The first occurred while I was in a three-year graduate school program. During the final-examination period of my first semester while studying late one night I became very confused. I went to a fellow Christian Scientist who lived in the same dormitory. His loving and compassionate words, as well as his prayers, helped to calm my fears.
Over the next few days I received prayerful help from a Christian Science practitioner and was able to complete my exams successfully by relying on God's sustaining presence.
During the next several months, however, I had to battle extreme fear and struggle for a clearer sense of identity. At first I had difficulty even in walking around town. But gradually I developed greater confidence as I grew in my understanding of God as my Father-Mother and of myself as His loved child.
