Harmony is God's indisputable law

We don't need to give in to disasters —small or large! As we understand God's law of harmony, we will see practical evidence of it in our lives.

There I sat, in a small corner of my kitchen. The rest of the house was in a state of turmoil. All the furniture was pushed to the center of each room and covered with dropcloths. The painters were grumbling about everything. The drapery cleaners had arrived and were upset because the painters had already taken the drapes down. Now they would not know which drapes belonged where (they said). The carpet salesman telephoned; the carpeting I had selected wasn't available. The painters announced that the carpenter would have to install the kitchen cabinets sooner than he was scheduled to. I had planned to have the redecorating and cleaning work done on the house in one week. Everything was well organized and in order—or so I thought! But amid all the confusion I felt downhearted.

Then I decided that I could go ahead with at least one thing as I had planned it that day. I had brought my Bible and a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, along with me into the kitchen so that I could study and pray. So, as I usually do each day, I read the Bible Lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly. I don't even recall what the topic of the lesson was that week; but as I started reading the passages from the Bible and from Science and Health, I noticed that many statements were included in the lesson that assured me of God's absolute control over His entire creation. Then one statement from the Christian Science textbook attracted my attention. It was "The Scriptures are definite on this point, declaring that His work was finished, nothing is new to God, and that it was good." Science and Health, p. 206. It was the words "His work was finished" with the emphasis on finished that caught my eye. Certainly all about me appeared just the opposite. It seemed unlikely that the work would be finished on time. Yet that statement that God's work was finished captured my thought, so I pondered the spiritual significance of the statement.

A redecorating project is certainly a small thing—especially when compared with all of God's creation! But as I thought about the idea that "His work was finished," I began to see that God's creation is not a human manifestation of a series of events. God's creation is the constant revelation of the spiritual reality of being, already complete and harmonious. Spiritual reality represents divine order, the ever-present reality of God's supreme law of perfect God and His perfect reflection, man. As Christ Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Matt. 5:48.
