Fifteen years ago while cycling to work I was struck by a car. I regained consciousness in a hospital and asked those attending me if my wife had been telephoned, which she had. I knew she would have called a Christian Science practitioner to ask for help through prayer, and I also knew this was the only help I really needed.

After I refused to have a kidney operation that had been scheduled, the doctor tried to convince me I should take medication and remain in the hospital because my condition was so serious. However, I signed a statement releasing the hospital from responsibility and was taken home in an ambulance. Work with two of the daily duties specified in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (Art. VIII, Sects. 4 and 6), the examples of healing in the lives of fellow branch church members, and a desire not to retreat from our family's decades of reliance on God in Christian Science for good health, resulted in my taking this stand for Science and in a complete healing through spiritual means alone.

A few years after this healing, someone phoned from the hospital and asked if I was in good health. He had seen my medical record and wanted to examine me and use my case as evidence in a medical paper he was working on. Indications I have had of the original doctor's good reputation and this phone call show me that this healing was surprising from a medical standpoint.
