The words "Christian Science" first came to my family's attention many years ago when I was a small child. Doctors had doubted that I would live to maturity, as there was no cure for the serious attacks of asthma from which I suffered; drugs brought only temporary relief. With the assurance that it would help me, friends of my parents gave Mother a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy; but the book was put on a shelf and never read.

When I was about ten years old, I was taken out of school for a year in the vain hope that the inactivity might help. A few years later a change of climate was recommended, and I went overseas with my mother for several months; but again the relief was only temporary. At the age of fifteen I underwent certain medical tests, and my parents were advised to eliminate specific foods from my diet.

For several years, as long as these dietetic instructions were followed, I lived a fairly normal life. But whenever I inadvertently or purposely disobeyed them, I suffered severely for several days, until finally morphine was administered to bring relief.
