I am very grateful that my mother became interested in Christian Science before she was married and that I attended a Christian Science Sunday School from the age of three.

I have proved Christian Science in many ways. A year ago an abscess developed in my ear; it was painful and swollen. I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. After talking to me on the telephone of God's great love for me and my perfection as the spiritual child of God, she said, "Pour in plenty of oil." By this she meant that I think deeply about the spiritual meaning of oil. I looked in Science and Health to see what Mrs. Eddy says about oil. In the Glossary I read (p. 592): "Oil. Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration."

I thought about this and suddenly realized I had been holding some very uncharitable thoughts about a young man to whom my son and I had lent money. He had been in difficult circumstances and we had tried to help him; but he showed no inclination to pay back the loan, in spite of the fact that he had a good job. I spoke to the practitioner about this. She said it wasn't my job to want to change this young man; he already was God's child, reflecting divine Principle. Every time I thought about him I tried to see him as God's man. In two days my ear was perfectly well; and within the next week both my son and I received cheques for the amount of money this young man owed us.
