From Christian Science Committees on Publication

In your article of May 11 "Facing the Futility: Hope in Faith Healing," the reference to the practice of Christian Science as "a mixture of Scripture with an appeal to the subconscious," falls strangely on the ears of a Christian Scientist.

To avoid misleading your readers, I would like to point out that the very basis of a Christian Scientist's prayer is the Scriptures, and for that very reason such prayer involves more than mere mental gymnastics. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (page 1):

"The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love."
