When my father passed on in rather tragic circumstances, it seemed that our family was engulfed in such feelings of loss and distress that we could not see our way out. I turned to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. The Golden Text for that week was (Prov. 9:6), "Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding." There was no disrespect for my father in my interpretation of this, but clear instruction to me to let go of a personal sense of grief, and reach out to God.

I was grateful for class instruction in Christian Science, which strengthened and refreshed me in all I had to do. I was grateful, too, for the Christian Science practitioner whose prayerful work supported us.

Many knotty problems had to be solved, and I was finally freed from the swamping pain of grief. A great lifting of the heart came when I saw that my father was free. I would not want to hold him back from spiritual progress. The painful grief was healed, and I could rejoice in my father's freedom. I feel sure that as we overcome grief, we are on our way to overcoming death and the fear of it.
