The Science Jesus Taught and Demonstrated
When Jesus walked on the water, fed the multitude, and raised the dead, he was acting on the basis of law. More than one-shot spectaculars, these were demonstrations of practical Science. This fact is important, because it dispels the belief in miracles. It reveals the Master's teachings and his demonstrations of healing as scientific and hence—at least to the degree that their basis is understood—within the compass of his followers' experience and within the scope of their understanding and proof. It's evident that he expected others to follow in his footsteps. Referring to his healing work, he said, "These signs shall follow them that believe." Mark 16:17;
While the word "science" isn't used very often in the Bible, the concept of law is frequently voiced and referred to throughout the Scriptures. And Jesus said in effect that he came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it. Among the dictionary definitions of "science" is this one: "Accumulated and accepted knowledge which has been systematized and formulated with reference to the discovery of general truths or the operation of general laws." Webster's New International Dictionary, Second Edition;
Although humanity has customarily interpreted law and scientific knowledge from the basis of matter and physical sense evidence, Christ Jesus' sense of law and intelligence rested on a metaphysical basis. He interpreted law as spiritual. In fact, referring to the two great commandments—"love... God" and "love thy neighbour as thyself"—he said: "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Matt. 22:37, 39, 40;
Invariably Jesus reversed the material sense of law in his healing of sin and disease and in his demonstrations of God's power. These proofs showed a far deeper grasp of law and power than had ever before been witnessed by mankind. His acts all pointed to a scientific knowledge that reached beyond matter into the realm of Spirit. He brought to humanity an understanding of God as infinite Love; he demonstrated the presence of God as infinite Truth and the power of God as eternal Life. Life, Truth, and Love defined law and substance to Christ Jesus. To him Life was immortal, good was unlimited, and harmony was natural. Anything that contradicted the nature of God was without scientific foundation, and he rendered it null and void.
It was partly through her thorough knowledge of Jesus' teachings and her deep insight into the spiritual import of his demonstrations that Mary Baker Eddy discerned the Science of real being. It was a discovery! The laws had been there all the time. As the light of revelation and understanding dawned, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science was able to use these laws and to demonstrate the power of God. Through persistent research, along with her work of healing and meeting human needs, she saw more clearly the nature of God and of man's relationship to Him. The scientific laws became clearer, and the indissoluble relation of cause and effect, God and man, became apparent. She set forth these laws in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. And in another of her writings she answered the question "How would you define Christian Science?" in these words: "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1;
Well, one may think, if this Science is the law of God, why hasn't the world accepted it wholeheartedly? One might as well ask why Jesus wasn't universally accepted. He came blessing and healing humanity and yet he was persecuted and scourged. Why? The answer lies in the fact that thought must be prepared to receive the unfoldment of Truth. The change of base from matter to Spirit isn't always easy for the human mind to accomplish. One must, in the language of Scripture, "be born again" (see John 3:3). It requires spiritualization of thought to recognize and to feel the law of God operating in one's life.
As a young child I came to know this Science, and I went through the training of the Sunday School. Step by step I came to feel the control of God's presence in various ways—protection in athletics, guidance in decisions, healing of physical difficulties and diseases. I came to know that God's hand prevented me from having adverse experiences. And when through willfulness I did get into trouble, His presence was there to guide me out. I began to understand that there is a law of God always available in every circumstance. The nature of God as invariable Principle stabilized my approach to life and gave me assurance. The definition of Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good" became a reality to me.
Through the cultivation of spiritual sense, we can become aware of the law of God operating in our affairs. The human tendency to catalog Jesus' deeds as miracles is at least in part due to the unwillingness of the human mind to be "born again." The materially-minded would try to place Jesus' acts beyond the reach of our understanding and hence of our ability to emulate. Mrs. Eddy points to the need for regeneration when she says, "Christian Science may absorb the attention of sage and philosopher, but the Christian alone can fathom it." Science and Health, p. 556;
The cultivation of this Science isn't merely an intellectual pursuit. It's a spiritual regeneration. This regeneration goes to the roots of our experience and demands changes that stir the deep recesses of one's character. No wonder it may appear to cause resistance. Such resistance is apparent in the present day. But this stirring can be regarded as a hopeful sign in that to the human consciousness imbued with the Christ the unreality of matter and evil must eventually become more and more apparent. How long this process takes no one is able to say in terms of time measurement. It will go on until the human mind yields entirely to the divine. But individuals need not wait for all humanity to come to these conclusions. Each one can make his way as the truth unfolds to him in his own thought and life.
Christ Jesus was "the way" (see John 14:6) because he presented the example for all men. He didn't set any time limit. Within a relatively short time he fully demonstrated the Science of being. To God, his Father, he said, "I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do," John 17:4; and he rose from material sense to the completely spiritual sense of being. He presented an open door and expected us to follow. Again, what he did was scientific, and hence understandable and demonstrable.
Today the Science of Christianity is available to all. Those who will may study and assimilate the truths, put them into practice, and reap the benefits of the healing power of God. No one can say much about the time it takes to work out our salvation. Each one will necessarily go at his own pace. But there remains the persistent question: Why should we procrastinate and delay the coming of the new birth? Mrs. Eddy writes, "The time for the reappearing of the divine healing is throughout all time; and whosoever layeth his earthly all on the altar of divine Science, drinketh of Christ's cup now, and is endued with the spirit and power of Christian healing." Science and Health, p. 55.
Blessed are they which do hunger
and thirst after righteousness:
for they shall be filled.
