In 1915 while attending normal school in California preparing to be a teacher, I was examined by the school doctor and he told me that I had tuberculosis. This filled me with fear. I wrote to an older sister in another state who had become an enthusiastic student of Christian Science. She advised me to go to the public library and get the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I was obedient to this advice. At once I accepted the contents of the textbook as logical, true, and illuminating. I was able to graduate that spring.

My sister had helped me obtain a teaching position in a school sixteen miles from her home. It was in a new irrigation district, and the school was primitive. I boarded with her sister-in-law, who had also been healed by Christian Science after being given up by three doctors. I had to walk a mile to school through all kinds of weather conditions, but through my complete faith in my new understanding of God, I greeted each day with energy and enthusiasm. This was a school of nine grades. I staggered the classes, and taught until five o'clock. Besides this, I carried on many outside activities for the school. I had no feeling of concern or limitation about my health, and at the end of the year the county superintendent told me that I looked in much better health than when I began.

After two years of teaching I was married to a man who had high ideals and fine moral standards. He supported me 100 percent in my religion. He had been drafted into the Army during the First World War, and we were together only a month before he was away eighteen months. I was so grateful that I was able to overcome any grief, for I realized that I must worship God first and know that my husband was God's child and in His care. During this separation I was able to have peace of mind. A few months after he returned, he developed a severe nervous condition. I recommended that he obtain help from a Christian Science practitioner, which he did, and he was healed in one month. He studied the King James Bible and Science and Health faithfully during this time.
