In 1911, my father was given up by the doctors because he was very ill with tuberculosis of the bones. He couldn't work anymore. A woman in the neighborhood saw this condition and gave him a copy of The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition). Other people saw that Herald and told him not to read it because Christian Science was wrong. My father put the Herald away for a time. However, he continued to pray to find the religion that healed as Jesus had healed. After that he took up the Herald again and began to read it prayerfully from cover to cover. He told my mother, "I have found what I was looking for. I am healed. I can go and work again." And he did.

I was then a small child and very ill. The doctor who had been consulted said that it would be better if I could die, because I, too, was tubercular and could never be healthy. It was believed that I had inherited the disease from my father. However, I was healed in Christian Science at the same time my father was healed.

Then my parents earnestly took up the study of Science, and my brother and I were brought up in it. As we lived far from a branch church, it was not until we had reached the later teens that we were able to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. We never had a doctor or any medicine during all those years. We had so many proofs of God's love and protection, so many wonderful healings in our family, such as those of whooping cough, measles, diphtheria, broken bones, and colds. My brother and I never had to stay home from school because of illness. Sometimes we had the help of a practitioner, and sometimes we were healed through our own understanding of God. I am very grateful for all that.
