We welcome this opportunity to bring you up to date on developments at the Christian Science Benevolent Associations at San Francisco, California, and Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
Effective July 1, a nonprofit corporation known as Arden Wood Benevolent Association will assume operation of the San Francisco facility. Arden Wood is the original name of the area in which the property is located. The facility will be governed by a board of trustees, all of whom are Christian Scientists.
The Arden Wood trustees at first explored a plan to erect a new sanatorium. However, the present building is so attractive and new construction so costly that they decided to remodel and renovate it. Because the existing number of rooms is greater than the demand, it was also decided to extend its use by offering residential living for Christian Scientists of advancing years, as well as nursing care and rest and study accommodations. Plans were therefore drawn to bring the plumbing, heating, and electrical systems up to today's standard and to create sixty studio and eight one-bedroom apartments. The entire program will cost about $1,700,000 and the trustees will be appealing for financial support from the West Coast Field. The facility will remain in operation during the remodeling, which is scheduled to commence September 1, 1975.
