Holding On

Many illustrations of the overcoming of adverse material circumstances through spiritual means alone are found in the Bible. Moses and the children of Israel crossing the Red Sea (see Ex. 14), Daniel unharmed in the lions' den (see Dan. 6), Paul and Silas freed from imprisonment (see Acts 16), are just a few.

In each instance the problem seemed insurmountable, but in each there was victory. Why? In reading these accounts one recognizes the participants have something in common—unyielding faith in the power of God to bring freedom.

When the children of Israel came to the Red Sea, Moses was steadfast in his reliance on God to take them through. Paul and Silas, bound in chains, sang praises to God. And the book of Daniel shows a faithful worshiper of the one God continuing his prayer even though threatened with the lions' den. Each narrative illustrates the need, and the reward, of persisting in the truth instead of being overwhelmed or giving up because of material sense evidence.
