For as long as I can remember I had a conviction that God did...

For as long as I can remember I had a conviction that God did not punish anyone and that He truly loves His children. I did not know the nature of His child, created in His image and likeness, as stated in the first chapter of the Bible, but I felt He loved me, and I was always looking for something to confirm my conviction.

When I was very young, I married into a family where the mother studied Christian Science. Through her I came into contact with practitioners and even experienced a healing of some kind of plant poisoning. My desire to understand more of the nature of God as Spirit and of man as His spiritual idea was being brought closer to fulfillment.

Later when I had stomach trouble, I turned wholeheartedly to Christian Science. I joined The Mother Church and a branch church and served in various capacities. In working out the physical trouble I studied the ninety-first Psalm and the twenty-third Psalm from the Bible, "the scientific statement of being" from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 468), and also "A Rule for Motives and Acts" from the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (Art. VIII, Sect. 1). One portion reads: "In Science, divine Love alone governs man." I tried constantly to put into practice what I had learned from my study. When lumps appeared to form in my side, I continued to study and to have help at different times from practitioners. I always was relieved of the pain, but permanent healing did not come.
