Evil—It's Only a Mask
"Look at me!" shouted a small boy dressed in a devil's costume and mask. I looked, and said in mock horror, "I've never seen a mask so mean looking." Immediately he removed the mask and smiled, "Now do I look mean?"
All evil is a mask, a false claim that mortal creation exists apart from or in place of God's perfect spiritual creation. Right where there seems to be an evil person, situation, or thing is the perfect creation of divine Love.
Christian Science teaches that all reality is spiritual. God is Spirit, Love, and man is His spiritual manifestation. Since Spirit is unseen to the material senses, the real, eternal, spiritual man— the image of God—is also unseen to the material senses. But through spiritual discernment we are able to know God, Love, and to know man, Love's reflection. It is our privilege to know that right where you or I as material persons seem to be, the spiritual selfhood of each of us coexists with God in the kingdom of heaven, eternal harmony. As we ponder these spiritual truths and they permeate our life, we can more clearly understand the presence of God and the real selfhood of ourselves and others. Then the unreality of evil becomes more apparent.
