God's Law: Basis for Peace

When Christ Jesus sent his seventy disciples out into the world to preach the gospel, he said, "Into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house." Luke 10:5; More than a courteous greeting in this case, Jesus' words could have indicated to some that the fulfillment of a nation's great longing was at hand. For generations the Jews had looked forward to the coming of the promised Messiah, one of whose titles was to be, according to prophecy, "The Prince of Peace." Isa. 9:6; And, indeed, to those who were receptive, Christ Jesus' teachings did bring peace—and they do now. When practiced, they enable us to attain that state of deep-settled, spiritual serenity which accompanies the consciousness that God is the all-powerful Principle, or infinite Father, of creation. They cause us to rest in peace, knowing that the harmonious order established by God in the affairs of everything He made is still in force and always will be.

Since divine Principle never ceases to be supreme and to maintain perpetual peace, we can know that all of the objects created by God eternally exist in, and are of, one Mind in perfect accord. According to divine law there is continually peaceful, progressive unfoldment of spiritual good in everything He made, from the least to the greatest.

As we reason scientifically from the fact that God is Love, as Christ Jesus revealed Him, and steadfastly honor Him as the only power, as Jesus did, we know with certainty there is no opposing, disruptive influence to disturb the peace and harmony of God's universe or to impede its progress. Christian Science shows that it was on the basis of this understanding that the Master was able, without loss of spiritual serenity, to meet and overcome the frightening mortal evidence of danger that sometimes confronted him. When others were afraid, he promptly rejected the suggestion of danger, obediently refusing to acknowledge any other power but that of the one infinite I AM, divine Spirit. The Gospels say he "rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm." Matt. 8:26; Elsewhere they tell of Jesus denying the evidence of the senses and bringing peace to the mentally deranged, the physically tormented, and those who were stricken with grief and fear.
