Strength According to Our Need

It's interesting to see that apparently quite fragile animals and birds display amazing courage and strength. A soft-feathered dove or a timid squirrel can become a ferocious warrior when its young are in peril from a predator many times its size. Similarly, when dangers threaten, men and women have been known to perform Herculean deeds apparently far beyond their normal capacity in order to save people they love. When the emergencies are past, they have wondered how they could possibly have had the power to do what they did.

The truth is, strength is not dependent on physical size or material muscles but is a spiritual quality of God, and every object of His creation reflects it. This is a law of God, divine Love. Whatever power any one of us requires in order to fulfill a God-directed purpose is always available to us through love, and we can all prove this in human experience whenever there is a demand. We have only to recognize this provision of divine law and to claim its operation in our human experience. Then we shall find ourselves empowered not only physically but intellectually, morally, and spiritually to carry out whatever tasks Love requires us to perform.

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy discusses the power of the divine law of Love to support us physically. She says: "It is proverbial that Florence Nightingale and other philanthropists engaged in humane labors have been able to undergo without sinking fatigues and exposures which ordinary people could not endure. The explanation lies in the support which they derived from the divine law, rising above the human." Science and Health, p. 385;
