Our Purpose Today

Each of God's ideas is created for a purpose. Can you imagine God failing to have a purpose for man, who expresses His exact nature? Man's purpose is to bear witness to God's being. He shines forth with joy in the activity God provides for him.

When we realize this truth, we have within our consciousness the highest purpose for our home, work, enjoyment—the glorification of God. If you go into someone's house, the objects of art or utility are to some degree characteristic of that person. His home expresses something of what he is like. The kind of home we have, the way we do a job, everything about us, hints at the way we think. How important, then, to keep that thinking spiritual!

We can improve every aspect of our lives by improving the quality of our thought. But it takes prayerful work. "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work—work—work—watch and pray,'" Message to The Mother Church for 1990, p. 2; Mrs. Eddy says. Not only should we expect to improve our thought, but we also should expect to gain a better sense of our purpose and a greater fulfillment of it. We can discover our spiritual mission. We can develop the Godlike faculties and qualities that will help us fulfill our individual purpose: perception, appreciation of beauty, our way of expressing knowledge, and others. This effort to improve fits us for our particular mission.
