When I was a new student of Science, my younger daughter got an infection in her ear. She was about a year old at the time. It seemed to get worse, and became quite painful. I was very fearful, especially when other people living in our house advised us to have a doctor. I called a Christian Science practitioner, who assured us that with God "you have the best doctor in the world." She began to treat the child through prayer, but I became more and more fearful as the baby cried with the pain.

Finally we did call a doctor for a diagnosis, who said it was a mastoid condition and there would have to be an immediate operation by a specialist. When I asked him if he was sure of the results if we decided for medical care, he said he could not guarantee them but he knew that if we left it the way it was, the child would have little chance to live.

After he left, my husband and I talked it over, remembering what the practitioner had told us, and that the doctor had said he could not guarantee the results if we chose to have surgery. We called the practitioner again and told her our decision to rely on prayer in Christian Science. She came right over, and her visit helped to remove our fear.
