John W. Gardner in his book The Recovery of Confidence writes, "A society capable of greatness must be confident that it has the spiritual and other strengths to rise to great performance." The Recovery of Confidence, pp. 105, 106;

That kind of confidence is much needed to counteract the current fashion of doubt and pessimism about our ability to handle the problems confronting our society.

But a society's confidence begins with the individual.
