Slough of Despond: Keep Out!
In John Bunyan's seventeenth century classic, The Pilgrim's Progress, Christian's advancing course suffers a setback when he falls into the Slough of Despond. A lot of us pilgrims today get bogged down periodically in our own slough of despond. All kinds of circumstances—disappointments, frustrations, unhappy relationships, unyielding physical, financial, or even world problems— afford a handy springboard for a dive into the depths of despair.
We need a mental warning notice before this emotional quagmire: "Slough of Despond: Keep Out!"
Why? Because, as Christian found, despondency and discouragement never solve any problem.
