These words of Mrs. Eddy's, which appear on the walls of many...

These words of Mrs. Eddy's, which appear on the walls of many Churches of Christ, Scientist, have helped me overcome many problems (Science and Health, p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." I was raised in Christian Science, attended the Christian Science Sunday School, and learned the need of expressing divine Love to overcome difficulties. As a wife and mother I have had many opportunities to apply the truth of these words.

When our oldest son was quite small, my husband and I had taken him to the home of some relatives. The child had the symptoms of a cold. A few hours after we arrived at our relatives' home our son became quite feverish and had much difficulty breathing. The condition became severe, and our son was coughing a great deal. Our relatives, who were not students of Christian Science, became concerned and wanted to take the child to a hospital because they thought he had pneumonia. Immediately the words mentioned at the beginning of this testimony came to my mind, and I prayed to understand that man does express all the qualities of divine Love and cannot have any ungodlike qualities.

Because of the fear expressed by everyone around us, my husband and I took our son and drove to the home of a Christian Science practitioner in a nearby city. When we arrived at the practitioner's home, our son still had a fever and difficulty in breathing. As soon as we were seated, the practitioner told us to think of the healing significance of "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). She explained to us that since, as Mrs. Eddy writes, "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter," nothing could be forming itself as a substance in our child to hinder his normal breathing or to cause him to cough.
