Christian Science came into my life when I was a child
Christian Science came into my life when I was a child. A friend of our family had been an invalid most of her life, and in later years, through metaphysical help of a neighbor who was a Christian Science practitioner, she was healed of tuberculosis of the bone. I had seen this friend abandon her wheelchair and eventually become a practical nurse for Christian Science patients. As a young child my thought was greatly impressed by this healing.
Our friend taught me to study the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. Because of certain conditions in our home I never had the privilege of attending Christian Science Sunday School. We later moved to a different area, and as I grew into my teen years, I did little study of Science, except to study the Lesson-Sermon daily. But the time came when circumstances caused me to realize that if I was to have the healing results of Christian Science, I must get a spiritual understanding of the Bible and a deeper meaning of Mrs. Eddy's writings, for she tells us, "Whoever would demonstrate the healing of Christian Science must abide strictly by its rules, heed every statement, and advance from the rudiments laid down" (Science and Health, p. 462).
Many blessings and healings resulted from my study. Then in my early married life I had quinsy. Although I was receiving treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, the illness was not yielding, and when my mother (who was staying with me) talked with the practitioner, the practitioner asked if I was having any medical advice or treatment at the same time as Christian Science. My mother told her No, but as we considered this startling question, we realized that a real close friend and her husband, who was a physician, had been coming to see me daily. A time or two they had suggested medical help, although they knew we were Christian Scientists. When this was revealed to the practitioner, and the possibility of the thought of divided loyalty was handled, I immediately experienced mental surgery and was healed.
