Relinquishing Earth Weights

Mrs. Eddy gives us "An Allegory" in Miscellaneous Writings, in which she depicts individuals in differing states of thought, endeavoring to make their way out of materiality toward Spirit. She portrays these travelers as burdened and weighed down by heavy baggage, which they are unwilling to lay down, though it is keeping them from reaching their objective.

In the allegory we read: "The journey commences. The encumbered travellers halt and disagree. They stoutly belay those who, having less baggage, ascend faster than themselves, and betimes burden them with their own. Despairing of gaining the summit, loaded as they are, they conclude to stop and lay down a few of the heavy weights,—but only to take them up again, more than ever determined not to part with their baggage." Mis., p. 327

Does this sound familiar? Are some of us trying to ascend the mount of spirituality, hoping to gain the summit of Christian Science—to understand something of the true nature of God and man—perhaps while struggling and weary, burdened with material trappings, deluded into thinking we can reach our goal and carry mortal beliefs along with us?
